What is Measure DD?
Measure DD is a Berkeley ballot measure to prohibit factory farms, formally called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It will be on the Berkeley ballot on November 5, 2024. Read the full text of Measure DD here.
Why is Measure DD important?
CAFOs confine large numbers of animals and produce large amounts of waste. These industrial facilities harm animals, pollute the water and spread disease.
Until June 2024, there was a CAFO in Berkeley: a horse race track that confined up to 1400 horses in the stables at a time. Hundreds of horses died at the track over the years, and it also polluted the shoreline of the bay with Coliform bacteria. This facility has finally closed, and Measure DD will ensure that another facility like it does not open up in Berkeley. Together, we can protect animals and the local ecosystem by keeping Berkeley factory farm-free.
